Berlin, 12 June 2025 – GROPYUS, the technology-based construction company specialized in aspirational, affordable, and sustainable multi-story residential buildings, has started construction work on its new infill development in Berlin. Under contract from BUWOG, GROPYUS is building a modern timber-based apartment building comprising 27 residential units across seven floors and a gross floor area of around 4,000 square meters on Hildegardstraße in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Completion is scheduled for spring 2026. As part of the groundbreaking ceremony on 5 June, the building certificate was handed over and a time capsule was symbolically embedded in the foundations. Through this project, GROPYUS and BUWOG are providing a clear demonstration of how infill development can be both sustainable and attractive using future-proof apartment buildings.

Philipp Erler, Co-CEO of GROPYUS, says: “We are starting construction on this first joint project in Berlin, where new and affordable housing is desperately needed. Together with BUWOG, we are setting a clear standard for innovative infill development projects in urban areas. This is one of the tightest housing markets in Germany, and it’s here we are showing how end-to-end digitalization and automation are setting new benchmarks for the construction sector – achieving results faster and more sustainably than with conventional construction methods. The close partnership between GROPYUS and BUWOG combines technological innovation with many years of experience in residential construction – a strong foundation for creating affordable and aspirational living spaces.”

Eva Weiß, managing director of BUWOG, explains: „Serial, modular construction using a well-designed system offers significant advantages. This is especially evident in infill development projects – minimizing disruption in the construction phase, which is better for the local community. We are delighted to be working with GROPYUS on this project on Hildegardstraße: creating new and modern homes while drastically optimizing construction times and processes through extensive prefabrication.“

The apartment building has ten two-room, five three-room and twelve four-room apartments with 53 to 142 square meters of living space, complete with south-facing balconies or roof terraces. The building consists of a base level, where the two entrances are found, five residential floors, and a staggered floor. Two additional children’s playgrounds, picnic benches, additional seating, and a small neighborhood square will also be created as part of the construction project. GROPYUS is manufacturing all the elements for the building in its highly automated smart factory in Richen (Germany).
