Berlin / Vienna, 19 May 2025 – GROPYUS, the technology-based construction company specialized in aspirational, affordable, and sustainable multi-story residential buildings, is building a new major development in Berlin: On behalf of its client, BUWOG Bauträger GmbH, a subsidiary of Germany’s leading housing company, Vonovia, GROPYUS is constructing nine sections of a new residential block with a gross floor area of around 16,000 square meters over a length of 170 meters in Berlin-Lichtenberg. This will comprise 158 residential units. Scheduled to begin in July 2025, this project shows how flexibly the GROPYUS building system can be applied to address the housing shortage. No matter whether it’s new residential quarters, infill development, or expansion through perimeter block housing. GROPYUS shows how its prefabricated building system with various design options combined with industrial offsite construction allows for fully customized architecture.

Philipp Erler, co-founder and CTO of GROPYUS, says: “After many years refining our product and processes and completing our first projects, we are now embarking on our first major project in Berlin – one of the most strained housing markets in Germany. The boom regions and urban areas are particularly suffering from the lack of affordable housing. This is where we come in with our industrialized and fully digital approach. We are realizing our vision of sustainable, affordable, highly attractive apartments that can be built quickly.”

Eva Weiß, managing director of BUWOG, explains: “Particularly in Berlin, we need high-quality new-build apartments that can be completed fast. Serial construction processes can make that happen. With Gropyus, we have a real expert in this field at our side. We are excited about this promising partnership.”

The multi-story timber-based buildings in Berlin-Lichtenberg will meet the KfW 55 Efficiency House standard and are designed to meet the requirements of the QNG sustainable building certification. They are classified as building class 5. A total of three one-room, 63 two-room, 75 three-room, and 17 four-room apartments are being built as part of this development.
